The Biggest Threat to Our DNA: Epigenetics + Environment

Posted By Nurse Andi

When we think of DNA, most visualize the long sequence of coiled connections that store vital information. This information is the basis of who we are, individually. Now, while that sequence may not be affected by your environment, how your genes (gene expression) work can.

Epigenetics

Our environment can also cause epigenetic changes by altering whether our genes are turned on or off. Epigenetics is the study of those changes in gene function, triggered by our environment and environmental factors.

Some examples of possible triggers include:

  • Food (Standard American Diet (aka SAD); fried and processed foods)
  • Stress or trauma (mental and physical)
  • Toxic relationships/social and work environment
  • Toxic chemicals/ industrial carcinogens
  • Lack of micronutrients/depleted soil
  • Poor air quality
  • Poor water quality and insufficient water intake
  • Poor sleep hygiene

Chronic exposure to any of the above, even short-term, can alter instructions and communication from our DNA to our genes and then our cells. Typically, this isn’t something we notice or feel right away (changes can occur accumulatively). We tend to blame the obvious, what occurs at the very moment, however we forget that our body has a job, which is to work as efficiently as possible, even during triggering events.

But, when chronic exposure to environmental factors occurs, it is a threat to our DNA.

This in turn can lead to damage to the delicate set of instructions in our genes and can make it more challenging for us as individuals to properly ward off environmental triggers.

Although our epigenetic marks are more stable during adulthood, they are still thought to be dynamic and modifiable by lifestyle choices and environmental influence. It is becoming more apparent that epigenetic effects occur not just in the womb, but over the full course of a human lifespan, and that epigenetic changes can be reversed.

Natural DNA Repair

Natural DNA repair ac-11® provides advanced support to boost the body’s natural defenses against environmental stress, fatigue and aging.

Natural DNA repair ac-11® products brought to you by SNiP Nutrigenomics feature ac-11®, a patented extraction of Uncaria tomentosa, a Rainforest Botanical, rich in phytochemical compounds called carboxyl alkyl esters.
